Ironman and ultra-marathon man Lim Nghee Huat will be running 217km to raise funds for St Hilda’s Community Services Centre. Nghee Huat has been accepted to race in the Badwater Ultramarathon 2014 on 21-23 July 2014 in Lone Pine, CA. Covering 217km non-stop from the hottest place on earth near Death Valley to Mt. Whitney, in temperatures up above 50’C, and a 48 hours time limit, this legendary event is one of the most demanding and extreme running races offered anywhere on the planet.
The new and improved 217km International Championship event will feature an incredible new route based in Lone Pine, CA and features over 19,000 feet of elevation gain, two dramatic ascents into the Sierra Nevada, and a 15-mile dirt road trek to an authentic ghost town. The two highest mountains with height of 10,000 ft and 9,000 ft respectively, will be the highest mountains Nghee Huat would ever experience and it would be the toughest race in his running history. 100 runners from 21 countries have been invited to compete in its 37th anniversary edition.
Nghee Huat is the first Asian runner competing in this ultramarathon event. A running champion since 1972, Nghee Huat set two national records when he ran 168km round the island to help raise funds for NTU’s Endowment Fund in 2005. He was then 52, the oldest runner. He emerged in first placing with a timing of 24 hours 45 minutes. In July 2007, Nghee Huat completed in 217km Death Valley Challenge, USA, the world hottest non-stop foot run with a time of 51 hours 49 minutes. He raised more than S$200,000 for Mountbatten Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC) through this endeavour.

Our VolunteersVolunteerism remains at the heart of all we do. Without our volunteers, we will not be able to serve our residents effectively. Whilst the ‘Ang Sahs’ of St. Hilda’s remain the largest group of volunteers, the realities of shrinking numbers and an ageing profile has become more and more acute. It is noted that the average age of LoveCOPE Volunteers today is 50 against 40 ten years ago.
With this realization, plans were made to address volunteer issues and management. A programme was started by Pastor Tan Piah to recruit, train and induct new volunteers. The programme was handed over to Freddy Choo in January 2011 who joined the centre as Volunteers Programme Manager.

| About 180 registered and actively involved with tracking and helping at major events like Christmas High Tea and Chinese New Year. The Centre will actively engage with LoveCOPE volunteers through more written communication via the Church bulletin. Visits will be made to Cell groups to encourage participation. New activities will be presented to Cell group members to encourage regular and more active participation.
LoveCOPE Sunday was held on 4 July 2010 and was followed by a lunch for LoveCOPE volunteers at the Eurasian restaurant. An encouraging message was delivered to the congregation by Mr Lim Biow Chuan, MP for Marine Parade GRC. |

| In addition to our regular partners, Tanjong Katong Secondary School & Meridian Junior College, we have now student volunteers from Dunman High School who have students working with the Care Team to provide handyman and cleaning services to elderly residents on a weekly basis. Uniform groups from Dunman High are now seeking to work with the centre on special projects. |

| An increasing catchment for volunteers are the residents in the estate who are able to contribute time and effort to serve their neighbours in need. Plans are made to reach out to recruit resident volunteers; again for specific activities. We are encouraged by residents walking into the centre in recent months offering to serve as volunteers. |
